My own journey started with a simple act of kindness from my high school student council advisor, who always kept a roll of Lifesavers in her desk. She’d slip me one and ask how I was really doing. That small gesture showed me someone cared whether I made it or not. As I worked toward becoming a first-generation college student, navigating my path through scholarships and student loans, I didn’t always have the answers I needed, and I felt that struggle deeply. This experience lit a fire in me; I wanted to be the person providing school guidance to other students, ensuring they had the support I didn’t. So, I became a school counselor. For decades, I’ve worked in school counseling, both in traditional and virtual settings. I’ve guided students through every kind of challenge and triumph—from kids quietly struggling to valedictorians aiming for top colleges and NCAA athletes chasing their dreams, including one who became a first-round NFL draft pick. Uniquely, I’ve sat on both sides of the IEP table, giving me a rare understanding of what families truly experience. Here’s what I’ve learned after all these years: every student deserves access to expert, student-centered support, no matter their situation. What I love most is developing creative, outside-the-box solutions for unique challenges and crafting compelling admissions narratives that universities can’t ignore. At the heart of everything I do is finding the absolute best fit for each student, whether that’s an elite university or a program that perfectly matches who they are and what they need. That’s why I created Kim Flett Prep, always guided by what is truly in the student’s best interest. And yes, I still keep a roll of Lifesavers in my desk as a daily reminder of why this work matters.
